She didn’t fit into Hollywood’s traditional beauty norms, but her powerful acting and badass attitude made her a star!
Maisie Williams is not pretty enough for Hollywood. When she realized she didn’t fit the industry’s beauty standards... she had to find another way to be noticed.
“ I don’t look like someone who is cast in the
roles that are, well sexualized.”
How did she manage to break through?
From Ned Stark’s small and helpless daughter... to an empowered, fair and ruthless warrior.
Just like Arya, Maisie hasn’t always been who she is today. From a young age, she felt different from other girls.
“ For a long time, I thought ‘I’m just weird
acting kid’. “
She was used to being the “black sheep “of her family. When she turned 12, she auditioned to Game of Thrones... and got one of the most iconic parts. But her battle to become a respected actress had only just begun.
For years, Maisie was heavily criticized to her physical appearance.
“ It’s only now I’m starting to realize the
characters that are available to me because of the way I look. It’s a very shallow industry and I don’t look
like someone who is cast in the role that is, well, sexualized. “
Designer Rob Sheridan said:
“ Any time online fan dudes criticize a strong female character with terms like ‘Mary Sue’ and ‘character development’ and
‘storytelling’, they are just mad that a woman got to be a hero”
Despite the negative criticism... Williams was able to ignore all bad comments and focus on more important matters.
“ There are creepy things that people say online
that I shouldn’t have to read, but there are bigger things going on in other
countries.”
After facing this bitter experience... Maisie became an empowered and free woman.
“ I’m so confident! I’ve just got this
confidence from the show on from playing Arya. I really feel like I just want
to inject that into each and every person that I know and love, then also, any
girl that admires the work that I do. I want to let everyone feel that sort of
confidence but I’ve been lucky to feel because of the show. “
She feels confident and proud of herself... just like Arya!
