A man changed Cameron Diaz’s view of the world.
The famous actress didn’t believe in the marriage institution.
“You could
say I have a marriage phobia.”
However,
when she was 42, everything changed.
“When I was 20 I thought that I would be
married and have kids by the time I was 20 because my parents were married and
had kids but the time they were 20. And then I got to be 20 and I realized… There’s
no f** way I’m having kids at 20!”
Cameron
Dìaz never understood why people got married.
“Marriage
is a dying institution.”
At the
time, she had dated several celebrities… Matt Dillon, Jared Leto, Justin
Timberlake… But none of them made her feel the desire to share a life together.
She liked to live life on her own terms and not drown in commitment. In fact,
she didn’t even believe in happiness.
“I don’t
know if anyone is really naturally monogamous. We all have the same instincts
as animals.”
But one
day, everything changed. During a barbecue at her friend Nicole Richie’s house,
Cameron unexpectedly found true love. Benji Madden is Nicole brother-in-law and
the lead guitarist of Good Charlotte. Two opposite personalities destined to be
together.
“It was one
of those things where everyone tells you, ‘You just know when you know’.”
All of the
actress beliefs went out of the window. A few months later, they got married in a
small intimate ceremony that lasted 15 minutes!
Today,
Cameron says that marriage is an essential part of her happiness.
“It opened
me up in different ways. I didn’t think it was something I’d do. ”
Unlike the
others, Benji made Cameron feel like an equal and a partner in life.
“I’ve
learned a lot from marriage. He inspires me every day. I am very, very, very
fortunate. ”
Cameron
found out that true love exists and saw firsthand how it can deeply transform
us.
